Cassie isn’t evil … probably. She just lacks a few things a boyfriend, a family, a soul. Convincing the “Others” she isn’t evil has never met with a lot of success. It usually starts with a local coven of concerned witches (humanity’s self-appointed protectors) making accusations and then there’s shouting, a chase, and in one case, a stabbing which turned out badly—although, to be fair, how many stabbings turn out well? So now she keeps a low profile, tries to avoid all contact with “Others” and moves every two years. This philosophy worked well enough in her life until she got to Seattle and formed a commitment to finally settle down. Nine months into her rainy new life, things start to fall apart …
First, something kills Harry—not that he didn’t deserve it, but still, it isn’t a good sign. Then Mr. Abbey, obviously a Dark Other who has been dead for over a century, tries to hire her to find some missing property and won’t take no for an answer. A dark-haired stranger with vivid green eyes, also dead, is forcing her to ask difficult questions of herself like “If he eats people but he's hot can you still date him?” Normally this is when she would cut-and-run, but the seer’s warning was clear if she leaves Seattle, she dies. Of course, there are no guarantees that this won’t happen anyway….

Isn't It Necromantic? The Others Book 1 eBook CI Bond
Isn't It Necromantic is author C. I. Bond's first novel and hopefully, not her last. Cassie Childe has had to live on the run, moving every two years until she settles in Seattle. She has lived there for nine months, found work in an antique store, built up a few friendships and hopes to be able to stay for awhile. Cassie is an "other", unfortunately, she nor anyone else can figure out what kind of "other" she is. This tends to make those in the "other" community nervous, so she tries to associate with "normals" instead. She has one superpower; she can give people the shivers, not a very good superpower in her opinion. She also has the ability to see into history. If she touches an object she can see its history, if she opens herself up she can also see the past of the space she is in. Worried about whether she should stay in Seattle, Cassie goes to see a seer and is told if she leaves Seattle she will die, incentive to stay. Her life gets interesting all the sudden when a frequent customer to the antique store gets killed. During the course of the book she meets a lawyer from the firm that has represented her family for over 2000 years who is bound to a demon, gets hired by a group of the twice damned otherwise known as "Sang", gets to know a beautiful green eyed Sang and generally gets in and out of all sorts of trouble. To say this book is quirky would be putting it mildly. While the book tends to lean toward the Urban Fantasy genre with it's high octane action scenes, which can be at times quite explicitly gory, it also has its humor and romance. The chapter titles, "If He Eats People But He's Hot Can You Still Date Him?" just say quirky to me. You have your usual cast of characters that you find in the paranormal genre - the to die for hero, the slightly creepy demon, the strange seer, witches, ghosts and our heroine - who doesn't know what she is. A few of the characters could have used a little more fleshing out, some of the chapters seemed to just start with no lead in, and I did find the odd spelling and grammar error, but all in all it was a well written book.
I like quirky, so I enjoyed this book. There is a scene that will make you question all the uses a food saver can be put to. There are a number of hot bedroom scenes and a pretty good against the side of the building one as well. I'm hoping this was a lead in to a sequel as I would like to see what new adventures Cassie can get herself into. All in all, a good read that I would highly recommend.

Isn't It Necromantic? The Others Book 1 eBook CI Bond Reviews
I was given a copy of C.I. Bond's Isn't Necromantic because the author wanted some real constructive feedback from readers.
The truth is, the plot and world Bond created reminded me a little of Charlaine Harris's Sookie Stackhouse novels, only Bond's main character, Cassie, is a little easier to relate to. Many who have read my past reviews of Harris's novels already know I am not a big fan of the Southern Vampire Mysteries, but I did enjoy Isn't it Necromantic.
The writing was smarter, and the characters, especially Cassie, seem more well-rounded. As Cassie is drawn into an underworld society on account of her psychic abilities and the a strange lack of soul, she finds herself targeted. Taken into protective custody of the Sang (Twice Damned Souls,) she's drawn to her guardian, Julian. As the Sang battle each other for ultimate power and ownership of Seattle, Cassie hangs suspended right smack in the middle of their epic war for dominance over Seattle.
Bond has classified this book as urban fantasy, claiming outright that it is not paranormal romance, but I tend to disagree. While the urban fantasy elements set this story smack dab in the middle of the modern fantastic, the romance mingles effectively with the paranormal characters that dominate the plot.
Overall, I give Isn't it Necromantic 3 out of 5 stars. The plot was nicely crafted, and as I said above, the characters are well-rounded and believable despite their otherworldly nature. Their are some editing issues that need attention, but for the most part they don't detract from the story so they're easy enough to ignore.
Urban Fantasy Setting Seattle (M/F)
Cassie Childe and her mother were nomadic, always on the run, but after her mother dies, Cassie decides that she's tired of always being on the run. She wants to be able to just settle down somewhere, keep to herself, and live a peaceful and quiet life as an antique shop keeper's assistant in Seattle. And she thought she just might be able to do that...that is until a guy named Harry dies. She seeks out an oracle to ask if she should start running again, or stay. The news is not so good, if she runs, she's dead; if she stays for the rest of her life she'll be owned and covered in blood.
Which would you choose...die free or live in bondage?
I liked how much effort Ms. Bond took in building up her world and characters. I like the different spins on certain mythical creatures, like the difference between Sang and Vampires. I seriously hope that the author continues to write this series...I want to know more about what and who Cassie is.
For her first book(as far as I can tell), and publishing all on her own, I think she did an amazing job, which is rare in the SPA community; as we all can attest to. Bond has a great start to something with a lot of potential.
I absolutely loved the twisted ending...totally unexpected and gives us just a taunting glimpse into why most people see her as "Evil" or an "Abomination."
I really wish we learned more about what Cassie was. My guess she's gotten the title of abomination due to being a hybrid of one side good and one side bad, like an Angel that got impregnated by a demon in her family line generations back which the original mother and subsequent offspring were never allowed back among the "Good" magical beings, and kept away and on the run from the "Bad" ones due to fear of being killed, made slaves, etc... Or, maybe she's a descendant of escapees from the destruction of the biblical towns of Sodom & Gomorrah. Maybe every descendant of this line could've carried a curse of no soul and therefore no redemption and an abomination before the eyes of the "Good" magical beings, why crosses and holy relics hurt her. Human, but cursed.
I also wish we got to know more about her inheritance that she receives from the family lawyer (a law firm that has be in existence in one form or another back to and before Alexandria fell). Who made it, what's it capable of? Why could she hear screams, moans, or sighs coming from the box?
I'm just going to be crushed if the author never writes another book about Cassie.
