Edith Craig (1869-1947), illegitimate, lesbian, suffragette, was the most extraordinary contributor to British Theatre of her time. As an actor on stage and in silent movies, she was also a brilliant costume designer, costume maker, stage producer, director and fencing expert. As she worked and toured throughout the UK and USA with her mother, world famous actress Dame Ellen Terry and Sir Henry Irving, her memoirs throw light on that iconic theatrical partnership, illuminating in a most colourful way the magic that gripped audiences everywhere. Not only did she meet and work with other illustrious names of the day including Sarah Bernhardt, Lillie Langtry, George Bernard Shaw, Alfred Lord Tennyson, J.M. Barrie, Thomas Beecham, Richard D’Oyly Carte, Queen Alexandra, King George V, but she also lived her personal life in a ménage à trois.

Edy began dictating her memoirs soon after Ellen Terry died in 1928 and revised them after the Second World War, just before she died in 1947. Now the memoirs are ready for all to read, complete with a lavish colourful collection of 64 rare photos and illustrations.

Edy was a Lady is a fabulous feast of recollections from one who for so long lived happily in the shadow of her mother, but is now in the spotlight in her own right.

Edy was a Lady eBook Ann Rachlin

There's something "unputdownable" about a biography that is told so much in the first person that it's almost as though Edy Craig is talking to you. From the extraordinary manuscript of actress Dame Ellen Terry's daughter's memoirs, painstakingly taken down by her amanuensis "Jacko" - Ann Rachlin has woven a narrative of great charm and infinite interest. The stage, the suffragette movement, life with the extraordinary talent that was her mother and England's greatest actress of the 19th and early 20th centuries, travel to America, and Edy's own unconventional lifestyle - her life was made for biography! And Edy was, as Rachlin, makes clear, a fascinating and compelling character in her own right, one whose light has been somewhat overshadowed by her famous mother. "Edy Was a Lady" puts Edy Craig back where she belongs, in the spotlight and center stage.

Edy was a Lady eBook Ann Rachlin Reviews

This is a truly magnificent volume. The book is lavish and elegant as well as being beautifully organized for those who may wish to find something or someone specific. Edy was fortunate in "finding" Ann Rachlin as her modern day champion - I cannot imagine anyone else being such a wonderful advocate for her historical importance. I love the fact that the book is so generously illustrated. For scholars, there is a gold mine here. For the rest of is, this is the kind of book to enjoy on a rainy weekend or a holiday (or any other time for that matter).
